Patrol Division

The patrol division is responsible for responding to calls for service 24 hours per day 365 days per year, in all of the unincorporated areas of Montezuma County which total approximately 2,200 square miles.

They are also responsible for handling calls for service in the contract town of Dolores and responding to non Indian calls at the Ute Mountain Ute Casino. All of the patrol deputies are federally cross deputized through the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to assist BIA with emergencies that occur on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation.

The patrol deputies generally respond to all calls for service from traffic violations to homicides and are usually the first deputies on scene. They are followed up depending on the severity of the call by deputies assigned to the detectives division, who are responsible for more detailed investigation and compiling the investigation for presentation to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Patrol deputies have the option to promote into a variety of roles including School Resource Officer (SRO), K-9, SWAT or other important responsibilities.

In 2009 deputies responded to 21,288 calls for service
