Hello, I am Sheriff Dennis Spruell and I would like to welcome you to the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office website.
It is an honor to have the opportunity to serve the citizens of Montezuma County. As the elected Sheriff of Montezuma County it is my responsibility to deliver firm, fair law enforcement.
The Sheriff’s Office manages the County Detention Center as well as providing civil service and law enforcement. We currently have 39 detention employees responsible for the jail which averages 100 inmates per day. Our jail operates a Worker Inmate Program where the inmates that qualify are guarded as they clean our roadways.
The Sheriff’s Office also has a Detective division with four detectives, a Patrol Division with 21 road deputies including supervisors and the Undersheriff as well as a Records division and Bookkeeping staff. All members of our Office have sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States.
In the last seven months the Sheriff’s Office has added two canines, hired five road deputies, opened a Dolores Substation, streamlined the Concealed Handgun Permit process and continue working with the Cortez Police Chief to support the Drug Task Force. We have been able to accomplish all of this while staying within our budget.
The Montezuma Sheriff’s Office contracts law enforcement services to the Town of Dolores and Ute Mountain Casino. We have formed strong bonds with the Montezuma County Commissioners, Cortez Police Department, Mancos Marshall’s Office, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Colorado State Patrol and Dolores County. Working together with fellow law enforcement groups and community initiatives we continue to make Montezuma County a safe place to live, work and vacation. As your Sheriff, I will always be there for you when you need me and I won’t backout.
