QUALIFICATIONS

For new and renewal applicants.

  1. Applicants must successfully complete a background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, information obtained from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Crime Information Center, Colorado Crime Information Center, and other Law Enforcement Agencies.
  2. Be a resident of Montezuma County.
  3. At least 21 years of age upon receipt of the application.

REQUIRED FEES (All Money Orders & Cashiers Checks are to be made out to "Montezuma County Sheriff's Office"

For new applicants.

  1. Sheriff’s Fee             - $50.00 (This fee can be paid with cash or personal check.)
  2. Fingerprinting Fee   - $10.00 (This fee can be paid with cash or personal check.)
  3. MCSO                         - $52.50 (This fee must be paid with money order or cashier’s check.)
  1. Sheriff’s Fee             - $50.00 (This fee can be paid with cash or personal check.)
  2. MCSO                        - $13.00 (This fee must be paid with money order or cashier’s check.)
  3. Renewal Late Fee    - $15.00 (This fee will be charged if the permit has been expired for more than two weeks.)

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

For new and renewal applicants.

  1. Copy of Proof of Firearms Training.

a.       Proof can be any of the following:

  • Participation in organized shooting competition or current military service.
  • Applicant is a certified instructor at time of application.
  • Honorable discharge from U.S. Military within 3 years of application.
  • Honorable discharge from U.S. Military that reflects pistol qualifications within 10 years preceding application submittal.
  • Certificate showing retirement from Colorado law enforcement agency that reflects pistol qualifications within ten years preceding application submittal.
  • Original handgun training certificate or copy of training certificate with original signature of class instructor.
  1. Copy of current Colorado Driver's License, Colorado ID or Military ID and duty orders.
  2. Proof of Residency (if your ID is not Colorado).

PERMIT EXPIRATION PERIOD

  1. All permits are valid for a 5 year period from the date of issuance.
  2. If your card has been expired for 6 months or more after the expiration date, the permit shall be deemed permanently expired. A person whose permit has expired permanently may reapply by submitting a new application and the required fees as a new applicant. 

RECIPROCITY

  1. Colorado law (C.R.S. 18-12-213) states that Colorado will recognize a valid permit issued in another state IF the permit holder is 21 years of age or older AND the other states equally recognizes Colorado permits as valid in their state.
  2. As of January 29,, 2007 the following states have reciprocity with Colorado, for the most current list of states, log on to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation website at http://cbi.state.co.us/ic/Reciprocity.html

ADDRESS CHANGE/PERMIT LOST OR DESTROYED

A permit holder must notify the issuing Sheriff’s Office within thirty (30) days of moving. Failure to do so is considered a Class 1 Petty Offense. Please download and complete the Lost Permit/Change of Address form listed above (which must be notarized) and call the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office at (970) 565-8452 extension 319 to inform them of the change of address.

  1. A permit holder must notify the issuing Sheriff’s Office within three (3) days of loss, theft or destruction of a concealed handgun permit. Failure to do so is considered a Class 1 Petty Offense. Please download and complete the Lost Permit/Change of Address form listed above or call the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office at (970) 565-8452 extension 319 to inform them. If necessary, at the time of notification, a replacement card will be issued.
